Reading = Good Writing

It has been a long time since I made a blog entry but I got this feeling that I should really write about this.

I went to our neighborhood computer shop once to get some of my files fixed since our computer crashed. It was early afternoon then when I came in, and as you would expect, the place is full with all the other people standing and waiting for their turn. As curious (and a bit of an ass) of a guy that I am, I started staring at the monitors of the other users as I waited. There are those who are playing and browsing and there are those who are making papers, reaction papers to be exact. Three users are doing their work, all of them are in high school since that’s what I saw on their work. As I read down, you could easily spot grammatical errors, weak sentence construction and non-coherence of each sentence. I could honestly say, when I was in their position, me and my batchmates wrote with substance, or at least they were, I’m a poor writer myself.

The point is, why do they write like that and not how the older generations made their pieces? Answer is simple, they never grew up to read.

Of course we know how to read, work books, text books, instructions on test papers, the nutrition facts behind the energy drink that we consumed the night before the said test. It is with reading certain materials that bring out one’s prowess with the pen.

My cousins for example (@bloowind and Dave) they both love to read and when my cousin Dave went into high school the materials he wrote are way better than mine just because he grew up reading novels. My friends who make brilliant reaction papers and essays all love to read novels, some of them read essays too and I guess this is one value that our educational system has to inculcate to the children. Read, because it leads to good writing. Easy formula.

Sooner or later in your life, there will come a time that you will be required to demonstrate your command with the language and trust me, it starts with a good read. Let it be a practice to the younger generation to pick up a book, finish it, learn from it and before they know it, the pieces that they will be writing would be extraordinary.
